What is a 13F Filing?
Every institutional investment manager with over $100 million in assets must file a Form 13F with the SEC each quarter, disclosing their U.S. equity holdings. Berkshire Hathaway files 13F-HR reports 45 days after each quarter end (mid-February, mid-May, mid-August, mid-November), revealing exactly what stocks Buffett holds.
About Berkshire Hathaway
Berkshire Hathaway Inc. is one of the world's largest conglomerates. Warren Buffett built it over six decades with his long-time partner Charlie Munger (Vice Chairman until his death in November 2023). Buffett stepped down as CEO at the end of 2025 and remains Chairman; Greg Abel has been CEO since January 2026. Berkshire owns dozens of operating businesses outright (like GEICO, BNSF Railway and Dairy Queen) alongside a public equity portfolio of roughly $300 billion β the part tracked here through its 13F filings.
Buffett's Investment Philosophy
- Value Investing: Buy great businesses at fair prices, not mediocre businesses at bargain prices
- Long Hold Periods: "Our favorite holding period is forever" β Buffett holds Apple, Coca-Cola, and American Express for decades
- Circle of Competence: Invests only in businesses he deeply understands
- Economic Moats: Prefers companies with durable competitive advantages (brand strength, network effects, switching costs)
- Cash Flow Generation: Prioritizes businesses with high, predictable free cash flow
- Management Quality: Seeks honest, capable managers who think like owners
Berkshire's Largest Holdings
Berkshire's public equity portfolio is famously concentrated. In the 13F for the quarter ended 30 June 2026, the five largest positions made up about 69% of the portfolio's value. Weights below are from that filing; the holdings page always shows the latest one we have imported.
1. Apple (AAPL) β about 22%
Apple is still Berkshire's largest equity position, but a much smaller share than at its peak, when it made up close to half the portfolio. Berkshire sold a large part of the stake in 2024. Buffett began buying in 2016 and has described Apple as a consumer products company with extraordinary brand loyalty rather than a tech company.
- Why Berkshire holds it: Enormous free cash flow, ecosystem lock-in, large buyback programme
- Position history: Built 2016β2018, cut sharply in 2024
2. American Express (AXP) β about 17%
One of Berkshire's oldest holdings β Buffett first bought AXP in the 1960s during a crisis. He views it as a toll booth on global spending with a premium, loyal customer base.
- Why Buffett holds it: Closed-loop network, premium brand, high-spending affluent users, float model
3. Coca-Cola (KO) β about 11%
Berkshire has held Coca-Cola since 1988, making it one of its longest-running positions. Berkshire has owned exactly 400 million shares since the 1990s; it has neither added nor sold.
- Why Buffett holds it: Global distribution, indestructible brand, currency hedge, growing dividend
4. Alphabet (GOOG) and Bank of America (BAC) β about 9% each
Alphabet is a recent addition, unusual for Berkshire because it is a technology company. Bank of America dates back to a $5 billion preferred-stock investment in 2011 that was later converted to common shares; Berkshire has reduced it since 2024 but it remains a top-five holding.
5. Chevron (CVX) and Occidental Petroleum (OXY) β about 4β5% each
Buffett has made a significant bet on energy, building large positions in both Chevron and Occidental. Berkshire received regulatory approval to buy up to 50% of Occidental, though it has not done so.
- Why Buffett likes energy: Free cash flow machines, inflation hedge, energy infrastructure is long-lived
Important: What 13F Doesn't Show
Berkshire's 13F only discloses U.S. publicly-traded equity holdings. It does not include wholly-owned businesses (GEICO, BNSF, etc.), foreign equities, bonds, cash positions, or derivative positions. Berkshire also frequently requests confidential treatment for new positions while building them, meaning some purchases appear with a delay.

Does this tracker show ALL of Berkshire's investments?
No β we display only the publicly-disclosed domestic equity holdings from 13F filings. Berkshire's wholly-owned businesses (GEICO, BNSF Railway, etc.), foreign stocks, bonds, cash equivalents, and private positions are not included, as those are not required to be disclosed in 13F filings.
Is there a delay in Warren Buffett's portfolio data?
Yes. By law, Berkshire can file its 13F up to 45 days after the quarter ends. The data you see is therefore at least 45 days old. Additionally, Berkshire often requests confidential treatmentfrom the SEC when building new positions, which can delay disclosure by an additional quarter.
How can I use Berkshire's 13F to improve my portfolio?
Many investors use Berkshire's 13F as a "conviction checklist" β a list of high-quality businesses that have passed Buffett's rigorous filter. It's not a trading signal (the data is delayed), but rather a curated list of businesses worth understanding deeply. Compare Buffett's holdings against ARK's holdings to understand the full spectrum of institutional thinking.
